Founded in 1971, Santarō is a 9-minute walk from Hirose-Dōri Station on the Sendai Subway Nanboku Line, or a 7-minute drive from Sendai Station. The large single building restaurant houses many styles of seating suited to all occasions, from private rooms for business lunches and celebrations to a special tempura counter area where crispy tempura is prepared and fried right before the customer’s eyes. The restaurant caters to children with special children’s tableware and baby feeding and changing spaces. The interior is divided into three main areas, all with their own individual ambience: the tempura area and Japanese cuisine areas on the first floor, and Japanese-style tatami rooms on the second. Originally built as a Japanese inn, the layout can be a little confusing, but conversely this is part of its unique charm. Windows look out to the beautifully kept Japanese garden, the views of which change dramatically depending on the angle viewed, but all of them providing an air of tranquility. Customers at the tempura counter have the chance to sample the finely honed skills of the chefs handed down through generations as they provide perfectly fried morsels made from only the finest ingredients, using the lightest of tempura batter made to Santarō’s unique recipe. It is this light batter that brings out the natural flavors of the ingredients, especially the seafood, to their fullest, and that results in a dining experience not too heavy on the stomach that is ideal for the older customer. The head chef studied in various establishments before spending over 20 years at Santarō, and those experiencing his culinary skills will definitely not be disappointed.
