12 minutes’ walk from Ishinomaki Station, Toribun opened in 1912. The restaurant was destroyed by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, to be rebuilt in its original location. It reopened its doors for business on October 28th of the same year. Even with brand new premises, the owner-chef makes clear his continuing commitment to provide the unique gourmet ethos that only Toribun can offer, and to be unaffected by passing fads.
The first floor of the restaurant has a counter with 7 seats and 7 private rooms furnished in a variety of styles: tatami with and without chairs, and even a room with table and chairs that can be used without taking off your shoes. Some rooms can have their size adjusted according to the number of guests. The second floor hall can also be adjusted with screens, allowing it a capacity from 60 to 150 people, perfect for receptions and wedding parties. Classic Japanese course menus are devised according to what food is seasonally available and the customer’s budget, while the regular lunch menu is available almost throughout the year. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, and is particularly popular for its children’s menu, making it a good place to eat at for families visiting the nearby Mangattan Museum. Private rooms make for an even more relaxing meal experience. The restaurant tends to get crowded on holidays, so reservations are recommended. Ishinomaki now gets many large groups visiting to see the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami, and Toribun is one of the restaurants that can cater to these groups for lunches, with parking available for buses. Toribun is firm in keeping to its catchphrase of “only the best for our customers.” The restaurant builds on its long tradition of excellence to always provide the best in quality and flavor. Great care is taken to provide food that is appropriate to its season, using only the best ingredients.
